Trash as currency

If waste was treated like currency, where would we be?

In several parts of Europe, there are systems which exchange money for used cans and bottles. With most people using these systems and gaining back fractions of a dollar for every returned can, how would people’s behaviour change towards recycling? More importantly, would results of waste diversion dramatically change if every person could get rewarded for helping to properly recycle?

If there was some sort of value attached to the waste we produce, many of us would be rich.
